As a cartoonist I draw cartoons and caricatures for everything from character map tee-shirts and souvenir mugs to humorous illustrations for ads, promotions and newsletters.

Subject matter and assignments vary and I'm quite flexible. I find that cartoons are quite effective for attracting readers' attention and for communicating your message.

Education is very much a part of what I do. I teach cartooning to gifted and talented classes in the Des Moines school system and teach cartooning at summer school programs in Des Moines and West Des Moines. I also give private cartooning lessons from time to time.

 

Gene sometimes appears on TV and shows both the on-air personalities and the viewers how to quickly draw simple, fun and easy cartoons. His appearances include such things as the famous "Doodle Challenge" and the "Name Game".
